This book is fascinating. Beyond the excitement of covering true crime cases, deep investigative reporting, and the ins and outs of a reporter’s work in Japan, I found the devotion to reporting and good journalism in Japan to be enviable. Genuine investigative journalism is not as valued – or even understood – in the US as it once was. If it even still exists.
Adelstein’s very natural voice throughout made the book an easy read, regardless of the many unfamiliar terms.
And the pointless deaths of women like Lucie Blackmun and Helena left me stricken. Their stories, as well as the author’s, moved me.
